Xoloitzcuintli Primitive Breed Rescue (XPBR) reserves the right to refuse placement of any dog for any reason. The well-being and safety of the dog comes first. XPBR requires that all dogs adopted from our organization be considered family members.
Adopters must have a telephone interview and complete our online application prior to being considered.
Part of our approval process is a home visit. If we have a volunteer within a reasonable distance from you, they will perform a home visit. If we do not have a volunteer within a reasonable driving distance to you we will contact you to discuss other options, such as Skype or Zoom.
Adopters must be at least 21 years of age.
Completing the application and submitting the $15 application fee is the initial step in the adoption process, but these steps do not guarantee an adoption will occur. The Application fee is deducted from the adoption fee once an adoption is finalized.
All adults of the household must be in agreement before adopting an XPBR dog and the adults in the family must be present during the home check. Some exceptions may apply.
All members of the household must meet the dog before the adoption is approved. All canine members of the household must meet the potential new canine family member prior to adoption. Some exceptions may apply.
The Xoloitzcuintli Primitive Breed Rescue Board will vote on all potential adoptions.
Vet references listed on the adoption application will be checked. All dogs currently in the potential adopter’s care must be spayed or neutered. Some exceptions may apply.
If you are renting your home or are in a condo association, you must provide a copy of the lease or association agreement at the time of your home visit. Misrepresentations on an application will automatically disqualify you from adoption.
The placement process, from application to adoption, can take many weeks. Why the rigorous process? When we accept a dog into our rescue, we make a commitment to him or her, to care for them, get them healthy again and find them a wonderful, loving home. We want to make sure that our applicants understand the lifetime commitment they are making and that they can provide our dogs with a great new life.
The dog you applied for may get several adoption applications. We accept multiple applications on the same dog for as long as XPBR deems necessary. Once an applicant has been approved, subsequent applications on the same dog will not be accepted. Where multiple applications on the dog exist, the XPBR board and/or the board member working on the specific dog will determine the best placement for the animal. It is not a first come, first served basis.
Once an adoption is approved and you have signed the adoption contract, you are required to begin arrangements for transportation. XPBR is not responsible for transportation. The adopter is responsible for any costs associated with transportation. XPBR will help with any resources they have to aid in finding appropriate transportation, but XPBR cannot guarantee any transportation. XPBR does not allow the dogs to be shipped in air cargo. Some exceptions may apply.
If you read and agree to these guidelines and would like to inquire about adopting one of our dogs, whether a specific one you saw or a specific size or gender of a Xolo dog, please email us or fill out the adoption application. All adopters must have a telephone interview or complete an online application before being considered. Please allow time as we are all volunteers.
Once your adoption is approved, you must complete and sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption donation fee. The adoption donation fee reflects your commitment to your new pet and allows XPBR to continue its work of saving and rehabilitating dogs in need.
Our adoption donation fees are as follows:

Our volunteer adoption counselors guide you through this adoption process.
Our objective: to help you and your family find the best adoptive pet for you and to provide you with the tools required to successfully transition your new pet into your home and family. XPBR’s adoption process reflects the serious commitment involved in adopting a new family pet.
The adoption process typically takes one to four weeks. As XPBR adopts dogs to loving families, we are able to save other animals in need of safety – many of them at risk of immediate euthanasia. Therefore, we cannot hold dogs beyond the standard adoption application period.
If you are moving or going on vacation in the near future, please present your application for adoption AFTER you are settled in your new situation or returned to your home.
XPBR does not ship dogs
We will work with adoptive families to arrange safe and economical transportation via ground or air by utilizing volunteer services such as Pilot N Paws or private individuals. Adopters may also fly themselves and their new friend on any airline of their choice in the cabin if the dog meets the size requirements set forth by the airline.
We will assist in any of the methods, but we do not pay for any costs incurred in the process.
